Law courses for service personnel

We are an approved learning provider under the MOD’s Enhanced Learning Credits Scheme (ELC or ELCAS) for service personnel. Our courses provide a great resettlement opportunity for anyone interested in studying law.

Studying for qualifications with the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives is by far the quickest way to acquire the knowledge and skills you require to make a transition into law. After only one year of part-time study you can acquire a qualification that will enable you to apply for work within a law firm. You can build on that qualification to become a qualified lawyer.

What options are available under the ELC scheme?

ELCs may only be claimed for courses that result in a nationally recognised qualification at Level 3 or above on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (England and Wales).

The following courses offered are relevant:

This is a paralegal qualification and an excellent starting point for your studies as it can also be used as the first building block towards qualifying as a Chartered Legal Executive lawyer. The five courses leading to this qualification can be studied by distance learning and usually take approximately one year to complete.  You will gain valuable knowledge and skills with which to seek employment in the legal profession with this qualification. Most service personnel who have made a successful transition have been able to get work as paralegals while they continue with their studies.

This is the first stage of legal executive training and comprises ten courses, five of which are studied in the CILEx Level 3 Certificate in Law and Practice. The Diploma is usually achieved over two years of study.

The second stage of Chartered Legal Executive training includes six courses and is usually achieved over two years of study. It is necessary to complete the CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice first.

We offer continuous enrolment on courses for all the qualifications listed above, so you can take the plunge as soon as you have made your decision.

I joined the Royal Navy after leaving school with only GCSEs and AS level Psychology. After serving for ten years I decided to try to fulfil my niggling desire to pursue a career in law. My research led me to the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx) and CILEx Law School (CILEx Law School).

The CILEx qualification gives a cost effective, practical route to become a qualified Chartered Legal Executive and can also be used towards qualification as a solicitor.

CILEx Law School breaks down the qualifications into separate modules allowing you to pick and choose what module you want to study and when you want to do it. I discussed my goals with the CILEx Law School staff who were more than helpful , advising on the units I would need to study and the best way in which to group the modules to achieve my goals in the most efficient and cost effective way practical.

CILEx Law School provide course manuals which are easy to read and follow, setting out the aims of the chapters at the beginning and useful ‘check yourself’ sections at the end of each chapter. Along with the course manuals CILEx Law School offer a fantastic online student area. This straightforward, easy to use area has additional course materials to supplement the printed manuals including self-test multiple choice questions to use as revision aids, webcasts and study guides.

There is also a brilliant forum. You are able to access the forum day or night if you need support, or if there is a particular area of the syllabus you are struggling on, and you are sure to find an answer or an explanation on here from when someone else has had the same query. If not, the dedicated academic support team will post a reply to your query or point you in the right direction. You really could not ask for more!

Along with the forum, the academic support team are available via email and telephone if you wish to speak to one of them on a more personal level.

As well as all the online materials CILEx Law School offer a superb induction day at various locations throughout the country. This day is a must for any student about to commence studying with CILEx Law School. It offers a great insight into what to expect and teaches all the little tricks to help with distance learning.

Studying with CILEx Law School will greatly increase your job prospects. Leaving the Royal Navy with no legal knowledge, I secured a seven-week work attachment with Andrew & Andrew LLP solicitors, dealing with personal injuries for clients and have now been offered a further three-month contract. The CILEx qualification is very desirable within a law firm and will boost your chance of success in your new career choice.

I left the Army after 22 years of service having enrolled with CILEx Law School on my first CILEx courses a year before I left the Army. These gave me the foot in the door that I needed to get into the world of law. I started off in the courts service in Fine Enforcement and then moved to work in the Commercial Recoveries team at Blake Lapthorn, a law firm with a national reputation listed in the Legal 500.

I am now a Litigation Assistant and working in an exciting and very professional environment. I owe it all to the knowledge gained through CILEx. The great thing about these qualifications is that you can present yourself for work after a relatively short period of study, and this is a huge advantage. I am still working to complete my CILEx qualification, but in the meantime I am in an excellent job in the legal world where my knowledge is appreciated.
