Employing a legal apprentice
We recommend that organisations of all sizes should consider taking on an apprentice, due to the significant changes in government funding being introduced. See our section on
What apprenticeships are there for the legal sector?
Apprenticeships are available at a number of levels. Intermediate apprenticeships are appropriate for training support staff into competent administrators, whereas Advanced, Paralegal, Chartered Legal Executive and Solicitor apprenticeships deliver legal knowledge and legal practice competence, and are an ideal recruitment and selection tool for the lawyers of the future.
Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship in Legal Administration
This apprenticeship is designed to train staff in legal administration ie to develop staff who can assist in the progression of cases but have primarily administrative, rather than legal, knowledge. Find out more about the Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship in Legal Administration.
Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Legal Services
This apprenticeship delivers paralegal competence in five areas of legal practice. It is suitable for bright school leavers with good A Levels, or as a progression route from the Level 2 Apprenticeship. Find out more about the Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Legal Services. The Advanced apprenticeship will no longer attract government funding after August 2017 and the new 'Trailblazer' programmes for Paralegal, Chartered Legal Executive and Solicitor schemes are now available.
The Paralegal Apprenticeship
This apprenticeship delivers paralegal competence and is suitable for bright school leavers with good A Levels, or as a progression route from the Level 2 Apprenticeship. Find out more about the Paralegal Apprenticeship.
The Chartered Legal Executive Apprenticeship
This programme incorporates the full training route to qualify as a Chartered Legal Executive. Those already studying towards CILEx qualifications are eligible to join this programme and will gain exemptions for units already achieved. Find out more about the Chartered Legal Executive Apprenticeship.
The Solicitor Apprenticeship
This programme is offered by CILEx Law School in partnership with City Law School and integrates a law degree and legal practice training into the apprenticeship programme. Find out more about the Solicitor Apprenticeship.
Are there apprenticeships for administrators?
Legal services organisations can also take advantage of the Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship in Business Administration.
This apprenticeship is designed for staff in business support roles such as HR, reception and data inputting functions. It is at the same level as the Intermediate Apprenticeship in Legal Administration, but the selection of modules relates more to business support and it is intended for staff within a legal services organisation who are not directly assisting in the progression of legal matters.
