City & Guilds/CILEx Level 2 Certificate for Legal Secretaries - £590

These distance learning legal secretary courses deliver our core qualification for would-be legal secretaries. If you can use a keyboard but do not have any legal secretarial training then this is the course for you. If you already have legal secretarial training or want to move back into the legal secretarial world then we suggest that you enrol on courses leading to the City & Guilds/CILEx Level 3 Certificate for Legal Secretaries.

What will I study?

To qualify as a legal secretary you will learn how to create letters, memos and legal documents using word-processing software and audio equipment. The syllabus also includes the structure of the legal profession, as well as roles and responsibilities within legal firms.

You will learn how to plan and prioritise your workload, the benefits of effective team work and the importance of managing effective customer relationships.

Level 2 unit in Legal Word
Processing – Text Processing
You will develop the knowledge and skills to produce documentation appropriate for the legal and business environments accurately, and become familiar with word processing techniques, legal document layouts and legal terminology. The outcomes include creating documents to a given house style, amending and formatting the layout of different texts, identifying and correcting spelling errors, creating tables and importing graphics into documents.
Level 2 unit in Legal Word
Processing – Audio
You will develop the skills to transcribe recorded material into documentation appropriate for the legal and business environments accurately. You will learn to interpret and implement audio conventions, and learn to format the layout and text of new documents.
Level 2 unit in Working in the Legal Environment You will learn the different roles and responsibilities of personnel within a legal office, and be aware of how relevant legislation, regulations and procedures apply to the legal and business environments. You will develop an understanding of working relationships, effective communication skills and internal and external customer service.
Level 2 unit in Legal Word Processing – Proof-reading You will develop the knowledge and skills to proofread documentation appropriate for the legal and business environments accurately, including identifying commonly misspelt words, correcting punctuation and grammar and ensuring consistency in capitalisation and formatting.

 

How will I be taught?

When you enrol with CILEx Law School you will receive course materials for the units that make up your qualification. You will have access to a Course Forum and Academic helpline to assist you as you go along. Once you have worked through the manual for a unit, and attempted the practice exercises within it, you can request your assignment.

How are the units assessed?

Each unit is assessed by one assignment. As you complete each assessed assignment, you submit it to your CILEx Law School tutor for marking and comment. The table below shows the assignments and test conditions for each type of unit. CILEx Law School will inform City &Guilds/CILEx of your assignment results. Once you have completed all the units that make up your chosen qualification CILEx Law School will request your Certificate from City & Guilds.

weeks of the assignment being requested by you. No requirement for supervision
Level 2 unit in Legal Word Processing – Proof-reading One timed assignment As above, but additionally, this test to be done
on a particular date – three sittings per year

 

Alternatively, you can choose to study the wider City & Guilds/CILEx Level 2 Diploma for Legal Secretaries.
