Who are the courses for?
These courses will prepare you for exams set by CILEx and are relevant if you:
- are studying the CILEx Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice - both Units are compulsory elements of this qualification
- are studying the CILEx Graduate Fast-track Diploma - Unit 22 Client Care Skills is a compulsory element of this qualification
- wish to develop professional legal skills without studying for a full professional qualification
What are the courses about?
By completing the CILEx Level 6 Client Care Skills unit you will acquire essential business skills in telephone negotiation and complaints management.
Legal research skills are particularly important for practitioners, and the CILEx Level 6 Legal Research Skills unit teaches applied skills using books and web-based sources with the objective of resolving a client problem.
Course design – Unit 22 Client Care Skills
The course is built around a face-to-face workshop and a specially-written manual on negotiation, complaints management and professional ethics. This is supplemented by material on professional ethics. Course materials include a mock assignment based on an audio file of a simulated telephone negotiation between a Chartered Legal Executive and her opponent. The exercise requires you to assess the effectiveness of the negotiation and complete follow-up tasks including writing an attendance note, drafting a letter and drafting an email. Your completed mock assignment is sent to your tutor for marking and comment before attempting the assessed assignment. The Client Care Skills course takes approximately 70 hours to complete including preparing and writing the mock and assessed assignments.
Client Care Skills workshops are delivered regionally and on a variety of dates. Although attendance is not mandatory, it is strongly recommended, and most students find that the workshops greatly improve their chances of passing the assessment first time. An administration fee is payable.
Course design – Unit 23 Legal Research Skills
The course is built around a series of online lessons designed to build your research skills and your ability to apply knowledge to client scenarios. Course materials include an online legal database and a printed course manual. Once you have worked through the online lessons, you will attempt task 1 of the assessed assignment, which is sent for marking to your CILEx Law School tutor. Once you have achieved a provisional pass in this task you progress to tasks 2 and 3. The Legal Research Skills course takes approximately 70 hours’ study time to work through and complete the course and assignments.

Membership of CILEx
To be eligible to have your assessed assignment considered by CILEx in your selected exam session you must either:
- register as a member with CILEx, and pay the annual membership fee, or
- pay an additional non-member's fee when you register your professional skills assessment with CILEx for your selected exam session.
It is essential to register as a member with CILEx if you are working towards the CILEx Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice or the CILEx Graduate Fast-track Diploma. The membership fee payable depends on the relevant membership level. Please contact CILEx on 01234 841000 and ask for the Membership Department.

This unit is assessed by coursework, which takes the form of an assignment set by CILEx: ‘the Assessed Assignment’. There is no exam. Your Assessed Assignment is marked by CILEx Law School and then moderated by CILEx. Once you have received a provisional pass on your Assessed Assignment from CILEx Law School you will register with CILEx for your Assignment to be considered for the next available exam session, so that your results can be included in the results for that session. You need to pay an assessment fee in order for CILEx to include your Assignment in its moderation procedures for a particular exam session. Administrative arrangements are explained in your Handbook.
