Boutique private client law firm The Burnside Partnership
The Burnside Partnership decided to hire a legal apprentice very early on, even before they had actually set up. They needed a full time employee to work alongside their solicitors and legal secretaries, and they thought that an apprentice would be ideal because they wanted someone who was really enthusiastic, flexible and ambitious. They were confident that as a small team, they could provide a lot of support and encouragement as well as a varied workload.
Chloe, their first apprentice, was employed as a Legal Administrator while undertaking a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Legal Services. She has some administrative responsibilities, including greeting clients and dealing with post and banking. She also drafts legal documents and undertakes research. She has helped with clearing and selling trust properties, and made visits to clients in their homes and hospitals. She has a very varied and busy role, but takes everything in her stride.
Fiona Wheeler, partner at The Burnside Partnership says:
“We are so impressed by our experiences with CILEx Law School. The work which Chloe is set is challenging and relevant. Chloe’s CILEx Law School assessor Jenny is really great. She is very friendly and encouraging, but also expects a lot and is helping Chloe to progress. She really understands the commercial realities of a law firm and helps us to balance Chloe’s training needs with the demands of our clients.
“The apprenticeship programme has exceeded our expectations in every way. Chloe is a vital member of our team and very important to the future of our firm. The support and training from CILEx Law School has been excellent. My two concerns in advance were that as a very small firm covering only one area of law, it would be difficult to find work for Chloe to do to cover the full range of competencies, and that overseeing the apprenticeship would be very time consuming. CILEx Law School have delivered Chloe’s training in a way which avoided both these problems. I have been surprised how well the competencies fit with the work which we would be asking Chloe to do anyway, and by how easy everything is from an employer’s point of view.”
“I recommend taking on an apprentice to everyone all of the time!”
The Burnside Partnership is now recruiting their second apprentice.
