CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice

CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice

The first stage of the academic training to qualify as a Chartered Legal Executive is CILEx Level 3. Two qualifications can be achieved at this level: the CILEx Level 3 Certificate in Law and Practice and the CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice.

The CILEX Level 3 Diploma

The CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice forms part of the academic training to become a Chartered Legal Executive (unless you already hold a law degree). The CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma is made up of a total of ten units, and is designed to give prospective Chartered Legal Executives a good grounding in all core areas of law and the flexibility to tailor the legal practice element of the qualification to their requirements.

Together with the CILEx Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice, it forms the academic component of the Chartered Legal Executive qualification and is mandatory unless you are eligible for exemption (qualifying law degree holders, for example, are exempt from part of the academic elements of the qualification).

What units do I need to study?

The CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice includes both mandatory and optional units. You will need to complete ten units:

Seven mandatory units

Two practice units

Note: these practice units must each be linked to a different law unit you are studying as part of your Diploma.

One additional unit

You can select either a law unit or a practice unit as your additional unit. If selecting a practice unit it will need to be linked to one of your law units.

Additional law units options are:

Study options

You will build your Diploma using a combination of CILEx Level 3 units based on the rules outlined above. You will find a full list of available units and additional information at the bottom of this page. There are three main approaches:

The most popular route, and the one we recommend, is to start by completing a CILEx Level 3 Certificate (five courses). You can purchase the qualification as a single package, a combination of packages, or as individual courses. You can then top up with individual courses or packages to complete the Diploma.

We offer a range of two and three-course packages besides the five-course Certificate package. This allows you to benefit from multi-buy discounts, whether you are building the CILEx Level 3 Diploma from scratch or topping up your Certificate. All packages are valid for 15 months.

Depending on how you are funding your qualification and/or the time you have available for study, you may find that you want to complete your CILEx Level 3 Diploma (or Certificate) one course/unit at a time. All courses are valid for 15 months. You just need to ensure that the courses you study meet the qualification requirements, as listed further up this page.

In your second year you need to select any mandatory units that you have not already covered. If you have already achieved a CILEx Level 3 Certificate in your first year, then very often there will be little choice in your second year. For example, if you have studied a CILEx Level 3 Certificate in Law and Practice (Elderly Client Practice) in your first year, then four of your second year subjects will be mandatory law units – Contract Law, Criminal Law, Land Law and Law of Tort. The fifth unit would be a second practice unit, for example Conveyancing, to ensure that you achieve the mandatory minimum of two practice units in total. You cannot select a practice unit if you are not also studying the related law units within your CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice. Also, if you are only studying two practice units because you have selected a non-mandatory law unit, your two practice units must be from different practice areas, to ensure that you have breadth in your Level 3 study.

We recommend the following further units to achieve your Diploma if you have obtained a Certificate.
